DIASPORA AND LAW:

Culture, Religion, and Jurisprudence beyond Sovereignty Today, different overlapping legal systems constantly interfere with one another, both on an international level, in complex transnational contexts such as the European Union or human rights law, but also in the context

of cultural diversity or conflicts between religious norms and civil institutions. Jewish cultures have long experience with forms of law beyond the state. The specific rabbinic form of legal reasoning and the specific halakhic way of life emerged in the very moment when Jewish sovereignty was lost. In different diasporas, Jews have developed multiple ways to imagine, conceptualize, and practice plurality in creative ways. The conference discusses these ways in light of the pressing questions of multireligious and multicultural societies and the need to conceptualize the law beyond the established form of the nation state.
