Germany Close Up

German Jewish American Youth Exchange Program

in cooperation with the Stiftung Neue Synagoge Berlin – Centrum Judaicum

Germany Close Up – American Jews Meet Modern Germany is a youth encounter program for Jewish, North American students and young professionals in their twenties and thirties. The program is funded by a grant from the German Government’s Transatlantic Program, which draws on funds from the European Recovery Program (ERP) of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy.

From October 2007 until December 2013 Germany Close Up was administered by the Stiftung Neue Synagoge Berlin – Centrum Judaicum (New Synagogue Berlin – Centrum Judaicum Foundation). Since January 2014 the program is administered by Aktion Sühnezeichen Friedensdienste e.V. (Action Reconciliation Services for Peace). Germany Close Up continues to work in close cooperation with the New Synagogue Berlin – Centrum Judaicum Foundation.

Since the program’s founding in October 2007, Germany Close Up has brought 250 participants to Germany each year. The program aims to enable participants to gain their own perspective on Germany through individual experience. To achieve this, Germany Close Up runs educational group trips with a length of one to two weeks that are designed to expose participants to a variety of elements and opinions that make up contemporary Germany. Program content is presented through visits to historical sites and museums, meetings and discussions with academics, politicians, representatives of grassroots organizations, members of the Jewish community and with young Germans of a similar age.
